Zelensky Stays Guarded on Cruise Missile Talks with President Trump Following Washington Summit

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have departed from a White House meeting empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired long-range Tomahawk missiles from US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky remarked following the civil meeting that he and Trump had discussed long-range missiles, but chose not to make statements on that topic "since the US administration does not want an escalation."

Trump's Stance on Missile Supply

While Trump left open the possibility of providing the missiles to the Ukrainian forces, his tone during the Washington meeting was non-committal.

"Hopefully Ukraine won't require them, ideally we can end the conflict without thinking about these weapons," President Trump stated, noting that America required the weapons for its own security.

Trump said that providing the missiles would be "a significant escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

International Diplomatic Developments

The Trump-Zelensky summit came just 24 hours following President Trump held telephone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to meet him in Budapest soon.

After the meeting, the US president took to his social media platform to call for Kyiv and Moscow to "stop where they are" and end the war.

Ukrainian Viewpoint and Suggestions

President Zelensky proposed that Ukraine could offer drones in exchange for the missile systems, a suggestion that prompted positive reactions from Trump.

The Ukrainian president also praised his counterpart on his efforts in securing a peace agreement in the region, implying that the US leader could build on that momentum to help resolve Russia's war in his country.

Future Negotiations and Concerns

When asked about whether the possibility of Ukraine obtaining the advanced missiles had influenced Putin to meet Trump, the Ukrainian president responded, "It's unclear," adding that the prospect had made Moscow to be "concerned since it is a powerful military asset."

Asked if he was departing Washington with greater optimism that Ukraine would get the Tomahawks, he said, "I am realistic."

Zelensky believes that using Tomahawks to target Moscow's energy infrastructure would severely weaken Russia's military funding capabilities.

Personal Consequences of the Conflict

"Truth and democracy will prevail, and all the terrorism and evil will disappear," said one Ukrainian store owner. "We just want to live, we refuse to surrender, we only desire to be left in peace."

This heartfelt reaction came as citizens in Kyiv continue to repair their communities and businesses destroyed by ongoing military strikes.

Continuing Peace Process

Recently, Trump had shown an willingness to the idea of selling the Tomahawks, even as the Russian leader cautioned that such a decision would further strain the US-Russian relationship.

President Trump had hoped that a face-to-face summit in the US state in last summer would help persuade Putin to enter into comprehensive peace talks to end the war, but that meeting did not achieve a decisive breakthrough.

The leaders are now preparing for additional discussions as the conflict in Ukraine continues to evolve.
