The United States Proposes a Decade and a Half of Protection Commitments, States the Ukrainian Leader.

In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy has announced that the United States has presented a draft peace framework featuring defense assurances for the country spanning a period of fifteen years.

Key Aspects of the Plan

The Ukrainian leader noted that in the course of a high-stakes meeting with American leader Donald Trump, he had asked for security guarantees for a duration of half a century. Yet, the current draft calls for a shorter commitment of 15 years from the United States.

It is not clear what these guarantees would assume, but the Ukrainian leader has been pushing for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, referring to Nato’s key doctrine that an assault against a single ally should be seen as an assault against the entire alliance.

Diplomatic Advancements

The President stated, American defense commitments for his country under the modified settlement framework have been completely settled, although the US President offered a more guarded assessment, putting the figure at more like 95%.

Each statesman stated that headway was accomplished during the meeting at the US president's residence. President Trump did note, however that there were "one or two tough" outstanding issues, including over territory.

The Path to a Meeting with Russia

In related comments, Zelenskyy informed the press that a talks with Russian leadership would be conceivable after the American and European allies endorsed a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to conclude the conflict.

This comment comes in response to Donald Trump remarked to reporters that he was of the opinion a three-way discussion between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen "at the right time".

Previous Interaction

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have not held direct talks since over five years ago. Their last meeting, facilitated by the French and German heads of state, aimed to revive efforts to end the protracted hostilities.

In a later instance, in May 2025, the Russian president refused to attend talks in Turkey for negotiations with Zelenskyy, turning down a face-to-face meeting suggestion to discuss peace in Turkey.

Key Sticking Points

A key sticking point is the disposition of the Donbas territory. The US President indicated that a suggestion to turn the territory, which is predominantly held by Moscow's forces, into a demilitarised zone continues to be a topic of debate.

Trump further commented that it will become clear within weeks if the conflict can be concluded.

The involved parties have stressed that the extended negotiations would persist as they strive for a final resolution to the nearly four-year hostilities.
