The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
