UEFA has initiated a disciplinary case concerning Chelsea's Pedro Neto after he pushed over a ball boy in the Champions League match against Paris St‑Germain.
The Portugal international, Neto, pushed the youngster in the dying moments of Wednesday's last-16 first leg at Parc des Princes – a match in which Chelsea lost 5-2 – which caused him to fall off a stool.
It sparked a heated exchange involving players from both teams.
Officials stated action has been taken against the player on grounds of "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" as per UEFA's code.
"The relevant committees will decide regarding this matter at a later date," European football's governing body added in its statement.
The Chelsea player said sorry after the match and blamed getting swept up "by the heat of the moment" when he sought to get back the ball.
"This is out of character for me. It happened in the passion of the game and I sincerely apologise. My shirt was given to him. I deeply regret it - I feel I have to apologise to him," Neto explained to the media.
"I have limited French, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and said to him that it was a momentary lapse.
"Finally he [the ball boy] laughed and I presented him with my jersey and said sorry many times. He could see what had happened and was content with how it was resolved."
Chelsea face Paris St-Germain in the upcoming second leg for the return fixture, following Newcastle's visit at their home ground this weekend in domestic competition.
