Tropical Storm the storm is projected to escalate to a rare highest-level storm as it veers towards Jamaica, causing life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to reach land by early next week, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Alerts of electricity outages and damage to infrastructure have been announced as the hurricane produces up to 76cm of rainfall and storm surges as high as 4m above typical tides. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

This hurricane is the 13th named hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Storm Risk

A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Although the hurricane is expected to diminish in strength to a fourth-level hurricane before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the storm will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the country.

Jamaican Prime Minister the statesman stated: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"Yet the best way to handle worry and any apprehension and concern is to remain prepared."

Residents are being told to protect their properties with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to gather essentials.

Alerts are also active for areas in the neighboring country encompassing the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Trajectory

Melissa is forecast to move across the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the point it arrives at Cuba, it is predicted to have weakened to a category three hurricane.
